Many football fans that anticipate the big game between college rivals, the University of Georgia Bulldogs and the University of Florida Gators, may be surprised to know there was no formal alumni association for UGA graduates here in Jacksonville. Yes, there is the Bulldog Club, which is active mostly during football season and welcomes grads and nongrads alike, but there was no University sponsored organization for alums to celebrate all aspects of campus life.
As San Marco resident James Hopkins put it, "You can't swing a dead cat without hitting a Gator fan."
But there's a growing number of Bulldog loyalists in the area. And they've just formed Jacksonville's first chapter of the 172-year-old University of Georgia Alumni Association.
Last month, Hopkins and 65 attendees hosted a kickoff party, "Spirit of Georgia on the St. Johns," at the Haskell Building in Riverside to celebrate the chapter's establishment. Other activities are planned over the coming months
